Navratri—a Sanskrit term meaning “nine nights”—is a major Hindu festival honoring the Divine Feminine (Shakti). Its most celebrated version, Sharad Navratri, usually falls between September and October and concludes with Vijayadashami (Dussehra). It blends devotion with celebration, honoring feminine power, encouraging introspection, and uniting communities through shared rituals and dance.
Why Is It Celebrated?
- Victory of good over evil: It commemorates Goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing righteousness overcoming malevolence
- Tribute to feminine power: The festival celebrates the strength, wisdom, prosperity, and artistic aspects embodied in goddesses Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati
- Spiritual renewal: Beyond rituals, Navratri offers a period of inner reflection, purification, and mental rejuvenation
Navratri is celebrated with fasting, prayers, music, dance, and community gatherings. The nine days are often divided into three parts:
- First three days: Worship Goddess Durga for strength to remove obstacles and negativity.
- Next three days: Worship Goddess Lakshmi for blessings of prosperity and happiness.
- Last three days: Worship Goddess Saraswati for wisdom and knowledge.
On the eighth or ninth day, many families perform Kanjak Puja (also called Kanya Puja), where nine young girls—symbolizing the nine forms of the goddess—are invited, worshipped, and offered gifts and prasad. This ritual honors the divine feminine energy and celebrates purity and innocence.
The festival ends with Vijayadashami (Dussehra), symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness—both in the world and within ourselves.
